A History of Uechi-ryu

Okinawan Uechi-Ryu (pronounced "Way Chee Roo") is a beautiful Chinese-style of Karate that promotes self defense while increasing confidence and self discipline. The style of karate was named after the great master Kanbun Uechi. Kanbun, an Okinawan, went to China and studied for 13 years from famous Chinese master Chou Tzo Ho, also known as Shu She Wa. Formerly called Pangainoon the style was renamed after his death in 1948 in his honor and memory.

Kanei Uechi, son of Kanbun, learned karate from his father and was the grandmaster until his death in 1991. Kanei, in 1957 opened the first Uechi-ryu Dojo with the assistance of Tomoyose Ryuko. Kanei greatly deepened the Uechi-Ryu system and provided tools to enhance his fathers teaching. Kanei was considered the first Okinawan to sanction the teaching to foreigners.

This page is dedicated to Master Kanei Uechi. Due to his efforts - instructors throughout the world still teach the traditional system to this day.
